Hermann Albers (HA) and Ulrich Stein (US) are Interior Architects who describe their style as Japanese-inspired Bauhaus. Their highly ordered, minimal designs bring calm and subtle order to their spaces. I worked with them to reflect this sensibility in their visual identity where cool colours, a modernist typeface and sparse, asymmetric layouts are combined with a strict grid structure.
The structure that underpins the identity is inspired by Japanese tatami (畳). These 2x1 mats are combined into various configurations to define spaces in Japanese architecture; an approach that dates back centuries.
The colour palette brings together traditional and contemporary hues, reflecting both the historical context and forward-thinking nature of the practice.
The tatami structure is adapted to the digital identity, with thin dividing lines highlighting the underlying structure and narrow margins reflecting the precision and craft in the studio's work.
